Prof. Peter Stewart
Prof Peter Stewart
Director; Professor of Ancient Art

Before taking up the post of Director in 2011, Peter Stewart was Reader in Classical Art and its Heritage at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. He was previously Lecturer in Classics and Curator of the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology at Reading University. His research mainly lies in the fields of ancient Greek textile art, sculpture, including Roman provincial art, Gandharan art, and connections between artistic traditions of the ancient world. His past publications include, Statues in Roman Society: Representation and Response (Oxford, 2003); Roman Art (Oxford/Cambridge, 2004); The Social History of Roman Art (Cambridge 2008); and A Catalogue of the Sculpture Collection at Wilton House (Oxford, 2020).

Dr Thomas Mannack
Dr Thomas Mannack
Senior Researcher; Reader in Classical Iconography

Thomas Mannack directs the Beazley Archive Pottery Database. An expert on Athenian painted pottery, he took his PhD from Christian-Albrechts-Universität, Kiel. His numerous publications on Greek vases include, The Late Mannerists in Athenian Vase-Painting (Oxford, 2001); Haspels Addenda (Oxford, 2006); and Griechische Vasenmalerei: eine Einführung (Darmstadt, 2002). He has co-authored volumes of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum for the collections at Oxford, Winchester and Harrow, as well as Greek Vases in the Frits Lugt Collection (Paris, 2010) and Beazley Addenda (Oxford, 1989).

Isabella Jäger

Research Assistant, Beazley Archive Pottery Database

Isabella Jäger works on digitising the records of Greek vases from the Beazley Archive to the pottery database. Specialising in the archaeology of Greek art and religion, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Uppsala University in 2021, followed by an MPhil in Classical Archaeology from Oxford in 2023. She worked as a procurement officer in the fusion sector before returning to Oxford to pursue her DPhil.

Greg Parker
Greg Parker
IT Developer

Greg Parker has directed the technical development of the Classical Art Research Centre since 1996. He has managed the Centre's role in many IT based research projects, ensuring that it is always at the forefront of technology. He developed the database and programming infrastructure underlying the Beazley Archive Pottery Database and CARC's other online resources: www.carc.ox.ac.ukwww.cvaonline.org, www.corpussignorum.org. He graduated from Hertford College, Oxford with an MA in Engineering and Computing Science.
